Although I claim to be connecting online for peaceful coexistence, I may have hidden biases that creep up now and then just like everyone else. The purpose of this post is to reach out to those who facilitate or share information online; in formal or informal settings, and suggest a humanistic approach to information communication Technology (ICT). There are heated and less heated discussions about social networks and groups for learning. The exchange may not always seem collegial or invitational since the main idea seems to be to get the points across at all costs. Some promoters of networks as defined by Stephen Downes (see video) seem to ignore those that do not follow their reasoning. Instead of showing tolerance and willingness to open up to those who may have other views or to whom the terminologies are foreign and may need clarifications, facilitators are exhibiting impatience and an attitude of you and I, or you and them. The obvious stereotyping and group idea confuses me (see Chaos) as the conversation seems to follow the traits of a group rather than a network (see Downes video). Personally, I would like to see a humanistic approach to ICT and a lot more tolerance.
Your feedback is always appreciated.
Thank you.
Nellie

Sometimes it is necessary to throw stones into lakes...
Love that, Peter.
Thank you.

I read the narrative in Stephen's video differently but I agree entirely with your generic point about humanism. What I sense in CCK08 is that at this point in the course groups are cohering around some shared values and perspectives. I am trying to read as wide as possible but find myself more at home in some readings.
I found your post invitational and I am intuitively draw to this kind of approach.

Keith,
Thank you for your comments. What did Stephen mean in your opinion?
Thank you.

I saw it as a non judgemental story. It seemed a working through of ideas and in a very public way.
(Sorry for my late reply).

Hi Nellie, is this an updated post ? I think I must be going mad but I meant to add a comment earlier this week when I first read your post and now returning I can't find the bit I was going to add a comment about - but I'll say it anyway - you always make really good points when it comes to how people can interact with others online, it is always better to try and share things and there are always better ways of doing it that you can learn. Thank you for being such an inspiration and example, warm wishes
Nicola
